Personal life
Early life and education
Serrano was born to working-class parents near Costalarg in northern Ibothia in 1939. He attended an Ibothian-Savamese grammar school and was able to achieve a scholarship to the University of Valerect
In the University of Valerect, he studied 'Religion and Philosophy'. He went on to specialise in Jakarism, and in 1966 achieved a doctorate in 'Ascesian Religious Studies', aged 27.
Work in Savam and family
He then went on to work with a social studies institute in Savam, where he was awarded two further degrees by the University of XXX. While living in Savam, he met and married Rébecca Fournier, a junior civil servant in the Savamese bureaucracy.
In 1979, aged 40, Serrano and his wife returned to Ibothia, to live in Valerect. They had their first daughter Abegail in 1980, and their second daughter Estela was born in 1982.
Lecturing at the University of Valerect
Serrano began lecturing on Jakarism and Ascesian religion at the University of Valerect, while furthering his research and studies on the subject.
He was lecturing at the University until 2000, when he was made Honorary Chair of the University - a position he still holds today. During his 20 years working at the university he had written 7 books and contributed to various journals and books on a wide scope of subjects including international relations and military relations. His links to the University have remained strong, founding his own scholarship the Serrano Award for students excelling in Religious Studies, which is open to any students from Ibothia planning on studying in the Religious Studies department of the University of Valerect.
The Presidency
Election
He was reportedly persuaded to stand for Presidency in 2001, by the former President Joana Casals, whose appearances on Serrano's election rally boosted support for the scholar.
Serrano's personality and love of Ibothia were major factors in his election. In November 2002, he achieved 44% of the first choice vote, and 51% in the second round, resulting in his election.
